Nowadays, living water is called alkaline water obtained with the help of ionization machines – its popularity is growing all over the world. Is the secret of living water really open or is the question still topical?

The discovery of Soviet scientists

Modern notions of “living” and “dead” water are associated not so much with fairy tales and amazing transformations, as with obtaining ionized water and discovery of its healing qualities in the 1960s in the USSR, and later in America, Japan, England and other European countries. In the Soviet Union, this discovery was made by scientists from the Gas Industry Research Institute in Tashkent, who were actually looking for the composition of a new oil and gas drilling emulsion. However, they accidentally came to medical waters.

Scientists used electrolysis of water: a constant electric current was conducted through the water, and a vessel with a special material divided in half, which allowed ions to pass but did not allow water to mix. Soon they noticed that water with a positive electrode (anode) becomes acidic and tastes positive, and with a negative electrode (cathode) – alkaline and charged negatively. These waters retained their new properties for quite some time when they were spilled into different vessels.

The surprises did not end there. In the process of experimenting with ionized water it turned out: if it was washed, the wounds, bruises and sunburns go faster, and chronic eczema disappears altogether. After putting cotton in activated water, changes were also noticeable – alkaline water contributed to its growth, while acidic water disinfected the soil. It turned out that it can be successfully used to sterilize medical instruments.

All these experiments reminded folk tales of living and dead water, and these designations stuck to alkaline and sour water. Intensively continuing the study of hydrogenated water, scientists created hundreds of inventions, including a household water ionizer, which the Japanese were the first to produce.

What is ionized water?

The water ionizer receives two different types of water in the compartments by passing ordinary drinking water through direct electric current. During electrolysis, the water molecules, which consist of hydrogen and oxygen, are divided into hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions. Salts dissolved in water are also divided into positive metal ions (calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium) and negative ions (chlorine, sulphur, phosphorus, etc.).

Ions of alkali metals, calcium, sodium and hydroxide are attracted to the cathode. Alkaline ionized (live) water with light negative charge and hydrogen pH 10-12 is obtained. Non-metal ions (chlorine, phosphorus, sulfur) and hydrogen ions are accumulated near the anode, which create ionized acidic (dead) water with a light positive charge and pH 2-4.

Thus, the positive or negative charge obtained during electrolysis, called the redox potential (ORP), as well as the alkalinity or acidity determined by the carbon pH, are the main parameters of ionized water. In both types of water, they vary greatly. For example, if the redox process is negative, there is an excess of electrons in the fluid and it becomes a donor of electrons. Electrons are movement, and movement is life. It means that the more negative ORP water is, the more free electrons it has and the “livelier” it is. Positively charged water doesn’t have enough electrons, so the liquid tries to use the missing electrons.

The pH level shows how many ions of hydrogen are in the liquid. It ranges from 0 to 14. Neutral water has a pH value of 7, which means that it contains the same amount of hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions.

If the base is hydroxide ions, the pH increases from 7 to 14: the higher the pH, the more alkali in the liquid. Decrease from 7 to 0 indicates that the liquid becomes more acidic – hydrogen ions predominate in its composition. Since ionized water is much closer to our body fluids in terms of its structure and properties than simple drinking water, it is immediately included in life processes and has a comprehensive effect on health. This is the main advantage of ionized water.

Water structure

It is believed that the structure of ionized water is close to that of structured water, which contains cells and tissues of a healthy body, so it is accepted as its own and can be instantly included in all processes.

In fact, structured water differs from ionized pH and redox potential, depending on the ionization device of water and the materials used. Structurization is a change in the structure of water molecules (reduction of the length of the molecule chain, changes in the arrangement of molecules), and ionization is a process in which an atom or molecule gives or takes an electron from another atom or molecule.

The question of water structure is still one of the most controversial among specialists. For example, most traditional scientists do not accept and calls pseudoscientific discovery of the Japanese researcher Masaru Emoto that the structure of water affects the environment. Masaru Emoto, with microscopic photographs, claimed that in nature, water molecules are arranged in a symmetrical form that resembles snowflakes. Such structured water is in springs, plant cells, such as melting snow and ice. However, the energy of negative emotions, cutting sounds and chemicals disturb the ornament of molecules and turn everything into chaos. Tap water is also considered energetically polluted because it collects negative information and energy from the environment. According to Emoto theory, the crystal lattice can be restored by classical music, prayers and loving words.

The second unclear question related to structure is water clusters – combinations of molecules of different sizes and structures, which still remain unresolved chemical task. Despite the fact that the intermolecular interaction between water molecules in the clusters is very weak, they cannot be destroyed either mechanically or in the cooking process.

In living water, such as rainwater or meltwater, the minimum number of clusters and unbound molecules is observed. The body needs this kind of water because large clusters, because of their size, cannot get through the membranes of cells – the body has to waste its energy to structure the water, but over the years these abilities are reduced.

Against acidification of the body

Since scientific research has confirmed that most chronic diseases are based on a modern Western diet that causes acidosis or increases in acidity, the study of this issue is gradually becoming an entire branch of science. Relevant are basic diets and especially the study of the effects of alkaline water. Does science confirm that the use of alkaline water has a positive effect on health?

It is necessary to distinguish between alkaline water, which can be obtained by adding soda and other additives to ordinary drinking water, and ionized alkaline water. Simple alkaline water characterizes only pH above 7, and the resulting alkaline water is also characterized by negatively charged ions and microclusters, which play an important role in the process of interaction with cells and the effect on health.

In fact, despite hundreds of studies, the effects of ionized water on the body are not yet fully understood. It is possible that different mechanisms influence different illnesses.

For example, it has been found that due to the large number of active carbon molecules, ionized alkaline water acts as a powerful antioxidant that finds and neutralizes free radicals, as they can damage cells and DNA, cause or contribute to the development of cancer, diabetes, ulcers and others.

Most research suggests that ionized living water has the ability to prevent cancer and kill cancer cells and their reproduction. For example, in 2009, scientists at a medical university in Taiwan found that living water helps destroy leukemia cells. At the same time, Japanese researchers found evidence that the water can slow down tumor growth, delaying the growth of blood vessels that provide tumors with nutrients. In turn, another study by Japanese scientists shows that it is possible to delay the growth of cancer cells.

Many scientific papers are devoted to studying the impact of ionized alkaline water on diabetes prevention. It has been found that due to its antioxidant properties, water destroys free radicals in the pancreas and thus protects cells whose disorders can cause diabetes.

The research shows that alkaline water as an antioxidant works preventively against many illnesses that cause free radicals. In addition, it slows down the aging process.

Which the ionizer manufacturers don’t want to talk about.

  • Most ionizers are made of plastic, which can release chemicals such as bisphenol A (BPA), which has a negative impact on health. In many countries it is already prohibited to use it in the production of at least baby bottles.
  • To increase pH, some ionizers use chemistry, such as sodium hypochlorite, which has long been known as a disinfectant.
  • Among the distributors of ionizers there is a very large surcharge – it is most advantageous to buy the ionizers from the manufacturer.
